Introduction

Problems that can occur if the wsw.ini file is missing or damaged include the wrong default font or template being used by WordStar for Windows.

There is a 'template' for this file in the WordStar for Windows installation directory (usually C:\WSWIN) called WSWINI.TXT.

Restoring a Missing or Damaged wsw.ini File

If the original file is lost WordStar for Windows will recreate the basic settings but all of the explanations and other options will be missing. To overcome this follow the steps below:

  1. Copy (do not move) the WSWINI.TXT file into the Windows directory (usually C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT).
  2. Rename the file to wsw.ini.
  3. Start WordStar for Windows.
  4. Click Edit, then click Preferences.
  5. In the Preferences dialog ensure that Document is selected.
  6. Ensure that the three Directory entries are correct for your installation: By default these are:

    • C:\WSWIN\DOCS
    • C:\WSWIN\TEMPLATE
    • C:\WSWIN\MACROS

  7. Ensure your normal default template is selected in the list of available templates. This is usually called default.wst
  8. Click View, then select the options you want when the program starts, such as the ruler displayed, etc.
  9. Click Procedures, then select the Keystroke Set you want to use from:

    • Standard Windows commands
    • WordStar for DOS commands
    • WordStar 2000 for DOS commands

  10. Click OK

Note: Any other changes you may have made to the wsw.ini file, such as changing the default character set to maintain extended characters during a mail merge, or for font substitution, will need to be re-entered directly into the wsw.ini file using a plain text editor like the Windows Notepad program.
