Preparation

Unzip the downloaded wordstar.zip file into a new folder. Read all of the text (*.txt) files to familiarise yourself with the program, and then temporarily copy the WordStar.dot (or WStar14.dot) file to your Windows desktop, and from there, simply copy the file into your Word STARTUP folder.

The next time you start Word it will use the WordStar Command Emulator.

Note that once the WordStar Command Emulator is in use the Tools menu is called Utilities to match the menu name used in WordStar 7.0d.

How to find the Word STARTUP folder

  1. In Word click Tools, then click Options.
  2. In Word Options select the File Locations tab.Under File locations click Startup, and then click Modify to display the full path in a folder selector window.

Installation options

  • You can copy your wordstar.dot file into the Modify Location window
  • You can note down the path to the folder, and then open the folder using Windows Explorer, and then copy the wordstar.dot file into it.

Option 1

  1. Use Windows Explorer to locate where you saved your wordstar.dot file, unless you''ve saved a copy on your Windows desktop.
  2. Click on the wordstar.dot file, and while keeping the left mouse button held down, drag it over the large white area in the Modify Location window, and then release the mouse button.
    The wordstar.dot file should be moved from your Windows desktop into the Word STARTUP folder, although you probably won''t see it there.
  3. In the Modify Location window, click Close, and then in the Word Options window, click Close again.

Option 2

  1. In the Modify Location window, click the arror at the right-hand end of the Look in box. The box should be showing STARTUP.
  2. Note down all of the folders from C up to and including the folder named STARTUP.
  3. In the Modify Location window, click Close, and then in the Word Options window, click Close again.
  4. Use Windows Explorer to locate where you saved your wordstar.dot file.
  5. Roght-click on the wordstar.dot file, and select Copy from the pop-up menu.
  6. Using Windows Explorer, browse to the STARTUP folder you noted above.
  7. In the STARTUP folder, right-click in the large white area, and then select Paste from the pop-up menu.
  8. Close Windows Explorer.

Typical STARTUP folder locations

For Word and Office 97 and Windows 95, 98, and Me:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office nn\Office\STARTUP (where nn is the version number)

For Office 2000, 2003, and XP and Windows 95, 98, and Me:

C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

For Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, and Windows 7

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
Note: The above path should be all on a single line with a space between Application and Data.
Where username is your login name with any spaces removed.
